1. Why go to Costco Shenzhen

Costco is the US members-only warehouse club. Hong Kong has no Costco — and that's the single biggest reason HK residents make the day-trip to Shenzhen. The Longhua store opened in 2024 and is the only Costco in South China, just an hour from the HK border.

Why it's worth the trip:

  • Lower prices: detergent, snacks, alcohol and electronics run 30–50% cheaper than HK;
  • Bulk packs: a 5L jug of olive oil is just ¥198 (the equivalent in HK is HK$350);
  • Exclusive brands: Costco's own Kirkland Signature is consistently strong;
  • Returns policy: 90 days, no-questions-asked (even if you've used it).

2. Top 10 must-buys for HK shoppers

  1. Kirkland vitamins / supplements — 50% off HK pricing;
  2. Korean seaweed snacks — bulk packs ¥50 vs HK$80;
  3. Beef / salmon — Australian beef ¥168/kg vs HK$280;
  4. Detergent / dish soap — 5L jugs cheaper than 1L in HK;
  5. 5L olive oil — ¥198 vs HK$350;
  6. Swiss chocolate — bulk multipacks;
  7. Wine and spirits — Kirkland-branded ¥88–188;
  8. Electronics — Dyson vacuums roughly ¥1,000 cheaper than in HK;
  9. Baby formula / nappies — bulk packs;
  10. Rotisserie chicken / pizza — ¥48 for a whole roast chicken, the best in-store deal.

3. The day's flow (8 hours)

  1. 09:00 HK meet-up — Lo Wu / Futian / Shenzhen Bay control point;
  2. 09:30–10:30 — immigration plus pre-clearance;
  3. 10:30–11:30 — charter to Costco Longhua;
  4. 11:30–15:30 — 4-hour shopping window (Costco rotisserie chicken for lunch);
  5. 15:30–16:30 — charter back to the border;
  6. 16:30–17:30 — immigration back into HK.

4. Customs notes

  • HKID + Mainland Travel Permit (or passport): original required;
  • HK duty-free allowance: HK$5,000 per person per trip (above that you'll be assessed);
  • Banned: fresh fruit, fresh meat, plants (HK customs is strict);
  • Liquids: 5L max per item, reasonable personal quantities;
  • Electronics: 1 large item duty-free + 1 carry-on item.

5. The membership card explained

Costco is members-only. Three options:

  • Klook tour: temporary card included — same-day only, no annual fee;
  • Gold Star membership: ¥299/year, valid at any Costco in China;
  • Business membership: ¥599/year, lets you make purchases on behalf of staff.

If you plan to make repeat trips to Shenzhen for shopping, the annual card pays back fast. The Klook tour is HK$50 (~¥45) more, so the card breaks even after about half a year.

6. Best time to go

  • Weekday mornings: lightest crowds;
  • Avoid: Saturday mornings + public holidays (60+ min checkout queues);
  • Avoid: late December (Christmas + Spring Festival run-up).

7. How to save money

  • Pre-book on Klook: HK$100 off the solo package;
  • Group of 4: HK$300/person vs HK$580 solo — save HK$280;
  • Buy the annual card: pays for itself within a year for regulars;
  • Beat the per-card limits: some items cap at 2–3 per card — split orders across people in your group;
  • Avoid impulse bulk-buys: the Costco bulk packs only save money if you actually use them.

8. Practical tips

  • Bring: travel permit / passport, shopping bags (Costco doesn't supply any);
  • Payment: VISA, Mastercard, Alipay and WeChat Pay accepted;
  • Big bags: the package includes vehicle storage but no porter service;
  • Returns: not on the day (you'd have to come back); online orders have a 90-day free-return window;
  • Children: welcome — there's a food court inside to take a break.
