1. What the Dujiangyan Panda Base is
The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in Dujiangyan, 70 km northwest of Chengdu. One of the three China Conservation and Research Centers for the Giant Panda (the others are Wolong and Ya'an), it is the closest to Chengdu and the least crowded. The site cares for 30+ giant pandas, including stars like "Qiyi" and "Yesha."
Its standout offering is the panda volunteer experience — ¥700/person/day to observe pandas up close, clean their enclosures, prepare their food (bamboo, apples, panda-cake bread) and pose for photos. One of the few programmes in the world that allows visitors close-up panda contact (Wolong runs a similar one but at ¥1,800+).
2. What Mount Qingcheng is
Mount Qingcheng sits inside Dujiangyan and is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. It is one of China's four sacred Taoist mountains and famed as "the most secluded mountain under heaven" (alongside Emei "the most beautiful," Hua "the most precipitous," and Huangshan "the most extraordinary"). Elevation 1,260 m.
Core sites: Tianshi Cave (Taoist patriarchal temple), Shangqing Palace (highest point), Yuecheng Lake, Jianfu Palace. The hike runs 3–4 hours, or 1.5 hours with the cable car.
