1. About Ocean Park

Ocean Park opened in 1977 — a full 28 years before Hong Kong Disneyland — and is a childhood landmark for many Hongkongers. It's built into the hills above Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island, split into two main zones: the Waterfront below (Adventures in Asia, Aqua City, panda house) and the Summit above (rides, aquarium, dolphin theatre), connected by a 1.5 km cable car and a 1.3 km "Ocean Express" funicular.

The park's signature isn't any one ride — it's the animals + thrills combo. You can watch Ying Ying and Le Le munch bamboo in the morning, ride a roller coaster at noon, see dolphins in the afternoon, and end at an aquarium with 5,000 fish. Almost no other Asian park does this.

The Water World waterpark, opened 2022, is a separate ticket (HK$320) — not included in standard admission. With kids and time to spare, split into two days: Park one day, Water World the next.

3. Best Route: 8 Hours, No Wasted Time

Ocean Park has tricky terrain (upper and lower zones) — without a plan, you'll spend 2 hours queuing for the cable car. Here's the route from a local family that visits three times a year:

  1. 10:00 opening: take the Ocean Express funicular straight up to the Summit — skip the cable-car queue.
  2. 10:15–11:30: ride the three Summit thrills first — Hair Raiser, The Flash, and Arctic Blast. Crowds are at their lightest.
  3. 11:30–13:00: Grand Aquarium (Asia's largest), with the 5 m glass wall and shark tunnel.
  4. 13:00–14:00: lunch at Neptune's Restaurant on the summit (HK$180/pp, the best view).
  5. 14:30–15:30: dolphin show (twice daily — arrive 30 min early).
  6. 15:30–16:30: cable car down (queues are easier now), back to the Waterfront.
  7. 16:30–18:00: panda house (Ying Ying, Le Le, Jia Jia, De De) + Chinese sturgeon exhibit.
  8. 18:00–19:00: Aqua City night light show "Symbio" (selected dates, mostly weekends).
Insider tip: shift lunch to 13:30 — you'll snag a window seat with a sea view. Between 12:00–13:00 the queue is 30+ minutes.

4. Top 10 Must-Dos

  1. Hair Raiser — a coaster along the cliff with three inversions over the sea.
  2. The Flash — a 180° pendulum swing.
  3. 4D Adventure — water-spraying seats.
  4. Grand Aquarium — 5,000+ marine species, 14 m viewing tunnel.
  5. Panda House — Ying Ying & Le Le (born 2007), Jia Jia and De De (newcomers from Sichuan in 2024).
  6. Ocean Wonders dolphin show — daily 12:30 and 15:30.
  7. Ocean Express funicular — links the two zones, animated underwater scenes during the ride.
  8. Cable Car — 1.5 km over the ridge, with views of Deep Water Bay and Tai Tam Reservoir.
  9. Aqua City — fountain plaza and seafront restaurants.
  10. Goldfish Treasures — thousands of goldfish in a Chinese garden setting.

5. When to Visit

  • October–November: Halloween Fest — the park is decked out, open until 23:00 (HK$100 surcharge, well worth it).
  • December: Christmas lights and "Snow World" (artificial snow — local family favourite).
  • March–April: nicest weather (18–25 °C), cherry blossoms.
  • July–August: school holidays, packed but most water programming.
  • Avoid: Lunar New Year in Jan/Feb (crowded + some animal exhibits closed); June rains (some outdoor rides may close).

Quietest day

Tuesday and Wednesday have the lowest visitor counts; Friday–Sunday + public holidays are peak. Stuck with a weekend? Be at the gate by 10:00 and front-load the three thrill rides in the first hour, otherwise individual rides can hit 60–90 minute queues.

6. Getting There & Back

  • MTR: South Island Line, "Ocean Park" Station Exit B (best). 10 min from Central, 18 min from Tsim Sha Tsui.
  • Citybus 629: direct from Admiralty MTR, 30 min, top deck for the view.
  • Taxi / Uber: HK$80–100 from Central, HK$150 from Tsim Sha Tsui.

7. How to Save Money

  • Book on Klook 3 days ahead: usually HK$150 cheaper than at the gate.
  • Student tickets: ages 12–17 with student ID, HK$175.
  • Senior tickets (65+): HK$100.
  • Octopus members: occasional 5% off (doesn't stack with Klook).
  • Klook Pass Hong Kong: bundles Ocean Park with multiple attractions for another 15% off. View Klook Pass HK

8. Practical Tips

  • Bring: power bank (the app burns battery), a poncho (water rides), sunscreen.
  • Not allowed: selfie sticks, outside food (water OK), drones.
  • Strollers: bring your own or rent on site (HK$100).
  • Wheelchair access: dedicated paths and lifts; cable car, Ocean Express, and Grand Aquarium are all accessible.
  • Download the official Ocean Park HK app for live ride wait times.
