1. What Shanghai Disneyland is

Opened in June 2016, Shanghai Disneyland is the sixth Disney park in the world and the second in Asia (after Tokyo). It cost US$5.5 billion to build and is operated as a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group. The park itself spans 1.16 sq km; with the connected hotels, Disneytown and Wishing Star Park, the full resort hits 4 sq km — roughly four times the size of Hong Kong Disneyland.

Its icon is the Enchanted Storybook Castle — 60 m tall, the largest and tallest Disney castle in the world, and the only one designed to "house" all 13 Disney princesses. Inside is the "Once Upon a Time Adventure" walkthrough, and every night at 20:30 the castle hosts ILLUMINATE! A Nighttime Celebration (projection mapping, fountains and fireworks).

In December 2024 the park opened the world's first Zootopia themed land — 4 hectares with a major attraction (Zootopia: Hot Pursuit), five interactive scenes, three themed restaurants, and meet-and-greets with Judy and Nick. It is the hottest new addition for 2026.

2. Tickets: 4 day-tiers + multi-day passes

Shanghai Disneyland uses dynamic pricing — check the official calendar to see which tier any given date is. Standard days tend to be Tue/Wed/Thu, Peak days are weekends, and Special Peak days are public holidays.

Multi-day tickets and annual passes

  • 2-Day Ticket: ¥985 (Regular Day equivalent), ~¥493 per day — about ¥100+ cheaper than two single-day tickets.
  • Wonder Pass (annual): from ¥2,400. 30 non-blackout days within a year. Only worth it for locals.
  • Magic Pass: ¥4,500, 90 days a year.

3. Top 10 must-do attractions + suggested route

  1. TRON Lightcycle Power Run (Tomorrowland) — the world's fastest Disney coaster, 0–80 km/h in 1.5 seconds; an optional VR-headset version is available.
  2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure (Treasure Cove) — the world's largest water-based Disney attraction, with a flying boat, projection mapping and live performance.
  3. Zootopia: Hot Pursuit (Zootopia, opened 2024) — race past Judy's precinct in a 5D motion-effects vehicle.
  4. Roaring Rapids (Adventure Isle) — a 12-metre drop water rapid.
  5. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Fantasyland) — a beginner-friendly coaster.
  6. Soaring Over the Horizon (Adventure Isle) — a giant-dome flying simulator over six world wonders.
  7. Adventure Isle: Roaring Treasure (Adventure Isle) — adventure-themed track ride.
  8. Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue (Tomorrowland) — interactive shoot-em-up dark ride.
  9. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Fantasyland) — perfect for ages 3–8.
  10. Peter Pan's Flight (Fantasyland) — the flying-ship classic, just behind the castle.

Classic one-day route (about 10 hours)

  1. 08:30, 30 min before opening: gather in Disneytown.
  2. 09:00, gates open: head straight to TRON Lightcycle Power Run (always go first).
  3. 10:30: walk over to Pirates of the Caribbean and Roaring Rapids.
  4. 13:00: lunch — I recommend the Royal Banquet Hall buffet inside the castle (¥268).
  5. 14:30: Soaring Over the Horizon and Roaring Treasure.
  6. 16:30: catch the afternoon Castle Show.
  7. 17:30: Zootopia (Hot Pursuit + character meets).
  8. 19:30: dinner and shopping on Mickey Avenue.
  9. 20:30: claim a spot in front of the castle for ILLUMINATE! A Nighttime Celebration (do not miss).

4. Premier Access (fast pass)

Shanghai Disneyland introduced Premier Access in 2022 — a paid priority queue, charged per attraction, ¥80–150 each.

The 5 most worth buying:

  1. TRON Lightcycle Power Run — ¥150 (90-min queues in peak season)
  2. Zootopia: Hot Pursuit — ¥150
  3. Pirates of the Caribbean — ¥100
  4. Roaring Rapids — ¥100
  5. Soaring Over the Horizon — ¥100

The combo is the better deal: the "Premier Access One-Day Pass" at ¥599 covers eight attractions and saves ¥200+ over buying individually.

6. Where to stay: should you book a Disney hotel?

There are two on-property Disney hotels:

  • Shanghai Disneyland Hotel (top tier): from ¥2,800/night, art-nouveau styling, 10-min walk to the park.
  • Toy Story Hotel (best value): from ¥1,800/night, Toy Story theming, 5-min walk to the park.

Four real benefits of staying on property:

  1. Magic Hour — enter 30 minutes before the public, first in line for TRON Lightcycle;
  2. Room key doubles as park admission — no gate scanning;
  3. Mickey-shaped breakfast and character meets;
  4. Free shuttle to Disneytown all day.

7. Best time to visit

  • Late March to May: 18–25°C, the most pleasant weather, cherry-blossom season.
  • Late September to early November: smaller crowds and osmanthus in bloom.
  • Christmas and Halloween: limited-edition theming and shows, but very crowded.
  • Avoid: Spring Festival, May Day and National Day weeks (overrun + Special Peak pricing); July–August is hot and packed with school holidays.

8. How to get there and back

  • Metro: Line 11, terminus "Disney Resort". 45 min from Lujiazui.
  • Didi / taxi: ¥200 from Hongqiao Railway Station, ¥130 from Pudong Airport.
  • From Pudong Airport: Metro Line 2 → transfer at Longyang Road to Line 11. About 70 minutes.
  • From out of town: high-speed rail to Hongqiao → Line 10 → transfer at Longyang Road to Line 11.

9. How to save money

  • Avoid Peak days: pick a Tuesday or Wednesday and save ¥220;
  • Book on Klook 7+ days ahead: an extra early-bird 10% off applies;
  • 2-Day Ticket: saves ¥100+ for families;
  • Skip Premier Access on regular days: queues are short enough without it;
  • BYO water: bottled water inside the park is ¥25;
  • Child tickets: half-price for 1.0–1.4 m; 1.4 m+ is full adult price.
