1. What is Shawan Ancient Town?

Shawan Ancient Town, located in Panyu District, Guangzhou, was founded in the 6th year of the Shaoding era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1233 CE) and is now nearly 800 years old. It is one of the best-preserved Lingnan heritage towns in the Pearl River Delta region. In 2014 it was named "China's Historic and Cultural Town," and today holds the designation of a National AAAA-grade scenic area.

Unlike heavily commercialised ancient towns elsewhere, Shawan still preserves authentic local community life. Walking through narrow stone-paved lanes flanked by traditional blue-brick grey-tile houses, seeing Lingnan-style *wok-ear* walls, smelling herbal tea wafting from old medicine shops, and watching elderly residents sipping tea beneath ancient banyan trees — this is a town that truly lives and breathes.

Three pillars define Shawan's cultural identity: Lingnan architecture (the ancestral hall complex led by He Clan's Liugeng Hall), Cantonese classical music (compositions like "Rain on Banana Leaves" and "Dragon Boat Racing" originated here), and Cantonese cuisine (the birthplace of ginger milk and double-skin milk desserts).

2. Core Highlights

Liugeng Hall (He Clan Ancestral Hall)

Built in the Yuan Dynasty and expanded multiple times during the Ming and Qing periods, Liugeng Hall is the spiritual heart of Shawan Ancient Town and one of the largest, most intact ancestral halls in Guangdong Province. Spanning over 3,000 square meters with a five-bay three-court layout, the interior showcases the four wonders of Lingnan architecture: wood carving, brick carving, stone carving and grey-sculpture decoration. The grey-sculpted roof figures are particularly striking — vibrant and lifelike, they have survived centuries of weathering in remarkably good condition.

The hall's name, "Liugeng" (留耕), comes from the saying "Ancestral virtue flows from the kindness of ancestors, inheritance of the heart-field for descendants to cultivate" — reflecting the Lingnan gentry's deep cultural commitment to generational virtue.

Lingnan Architecture's "Four Wonders"

  • Brick carving: Exquisite brick decorations throughout the town, featuring flowers, birds, fish, insects and historical tales, with intricate craftsmanship.
  • Wood carving: The beam and timber carvings inside Liugeng Hall represent the pinnacle of Guangdong wood-carving artistry.
  • Stone carving: Guardian lions at entrances and relief work on stone columns showcase exceptional stonecraft.
  • Grey-sculpture decoration: Roof ornaments made from stone dust and glutinous rice, rendered in vibrant colours — the most distinctive element of Lingnan architecture.

Other Key Attractions

  • San-Ren Hall: Cantonese classical music museum, showcasing the achievements of the "Three He Masters" (He Liutang, He Yonian, and He Shaoxia).
  • Oyster Shell Wall: A unique construction technique of the Pearl River Delta coastal villages — walls built from oyster shells for insulation and durability.
  • Wenfeng Tower: One of the town's iconic structures; climb to the top for a panoramic view of Shawan.
  • An'ning West Street: The best-preserved ancient street, lined with Ming and Qing period shops and residences.
  • Cantonese Music Hall: Experience live performances of Cantonese opera and classical music; free performances at select times.

3. Must-Try Local Food

Shawan is called the "Food Paradise of Guangdong," celebrated for water-buffalo milk products and traditional Cantonese cuisine. Here's the essential eating list:

Ginger Milk (Must-Try No. 1)

Shawan is the birthplace of ginger milk. The preparation method is fascinating: scalding hot water-buffalo milk is "struck" into a bowl of ginger juice. Enzymes in the ginger react with milk protein, causing it to naturally set into a silky smooth custard. Authentic Shawan ginger milk uses local water-buffalo milk for a creamier, richer flavour than standard dairy milk. Try the venerable shops "Qinxiang Yuan" and "Wen Ji."

Double-Skin Milk

Another classic water-buffalo milk dessert. Milk is heated to boiling, then cooled to form the first skin layer. The milk beneath is poured off, mixed with egg white and stirred, then poured back into the bowl and steamed, forming a second skin. The result is impossibly silky and delicate.

Other Must-Try Dishes

  • Fried Milk: Solidified milk paste coated in batter and deep-fried — crispy outside, creamy inside.
  • Dog Congee: Despite its name, this is a savoury rice porridge made with pork offal, fish slices and rice paste — a Panyu classic.
  • Fish-Skin Dumplings: Dumplings with a crispy carp-skin wrapper and pork filling — light and springy.
  • Water-Buffalo Milk Ice Cream: Sold throughout the town, with richer dairy flavour than standard ice cream.
  • Herbal Cooling Tea: The embodiment of Cantonese herbal tea culture; the town's tea shops are often decades old.

Budget ¥50–80 for food and you can sample almost everything on this list.

6. Best Time to Visit

  • Season: October to March (autumn and winter) is most comfortable. Guangzhou summers are scorching and humid, making outdoor sightseeing challenging.
  • Time of Day: Arrive around 09:00–10:00, visit museums first (fewer crowds), have lunch at midday, explore the streets in the afternoon.
  • Festivals: Lunar New Year (lion dances, decorated floats), Mid-Autumn Festival (lantern displays), and Dragon Boat Festival are spectacular but extremely crowded.
  • Avoid: China's May Day and October Golden Week holidays bring overwhelming visitor numbers — plan around these if possible.

7. Practical Visitor Tips

  • Footwear: The town's surfaces are mainly stone and slate — wear comfortable flat shoes or trainers.
  • Sun Protection: Guangzhou has intense sunshine; always bring an umbrella and sunscreen, especially in summer.
  • Cash: Some long-established food vendors accept only cash or WeChat Pay — carry some RMB.
  • Photography: Best photo spots: Liugeng Hall's main gate, the oyster shell wall, An'ning West Street, and the wok-ear walls of various ancestral halls.
  • Guided Tours: If you're interested in history and culture, hiring a guide is highly recommended — many architectural details and feng-shui placements are easy to miss otherwise.
  • Combination Visit: Consider pairing with Chen Clan Hall on the same day — morning at Chen Clan, afternoon at Shawan — for a comprehensive look at two Lingnan architectural masterpieces.
  • Luggage Storage: The visitor centre at the town's south entrance offers free luggage storage.
