1. About Silver Cave: What You Need to Know
Silver Cave — also known as Yinziyan Cave — is a national 4A-level scenic area located in Maling Town, Liupu City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, near Guilin. The cave spans approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) of underground passages, formed by karst limestone geology. Inside are pendants, columns, and formations so pristine and translucent they resemble silver, hence the name. The cave pierces through twelve mountain peaks and is classified as a stepped-tier cave with three distinct sections: lower cave, grand hall, and upper cave.
The cave is famous for its "Three Marvels" (Snowfall Waterfall, Musical Stone Screen, and Fairyland Pool) and "Three Treasures" (Buddha Preaching, Single Pillar Holding Heaven, and Pearl Umbrella), plus twelve other named formations in total. An old saying goes: "Visit Silver Cave and you'll never lack money." While a playful saying, it reflects how highly locals and visitors regard this natural spectacle. Silver Cave welcomes over one million visitors annually and is among China's premier cave attractions.
For visitors, allow 4 hours minimum. Below we cover everything in the order you'll actually use it: buy ticket → enter → tour the cave → avoid the pitfalls.

3. Introduction
Silver Cave is one of the most representative karst cave formations in the Guilin landscape. The passages pierce through twelve peaks and consist of different geological strata, each hosting stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone that are crystalline and pristine white — like silver pouring down from the night sky, which inspired its name.
The entire 2-km cave divides into three sections: the lower cave (dominated by stalagmites and columns), the grand hall (open and expansive), and the upper cave (known for delicate curtains and draperies). Inside are the "Three Marvels" — Snowfall Waterfall, Musical Stone Screen, and Fairyland Pool — plus the "Three Treasures" — Buddha Preaching, Single Pillar Holding Heaven, and Pearl Umbrella — collectively forming the "Twelve Great Views" and making Silver Cave one of China's finest cave attractions.
4. Cave Highlights & Formations
The Three Marvels
- Snowfall Waterfall (Xuanshan Feipu): The most spectacular formation. A massive white limestone curtain cascades from ceiling to floor, illuminated by colored lights to resemble a snowy mountain waterfall. Approximately 30 m tall and 20 m wide, it is the iconic landmark of Silver Cave.
- Musical Stone Screen (Yinyue Shiping): A delicate stone curtain as thin as a dragonfly wing hangs from the cave wall. Gently tapped at different points, it produces varying tones like a stone piano. Formed over hundreds of thousands of years, the curtain is only millimeters thick. (Note: visitors can no longer touch it directly; guides now demonstrate.)
- Fairyland Pool (Yaozhao Xianjing): Located in the cave's largest chamber (over 1,000 sq m), stalagmites forest the floor, reflecting in pools of water below and bathed in colored lighting to resemble the mythical Fairyland of the Western Queen Mother.
The Three Treasures
- Buddha Preaching (Fozu Lunying): Natural rock formations arranged to resemble a seated Buddha lecturing, surrounded by smaller rocks like listening disciples — remarkably lifelike.
- Single Pillar Holding Heaven (Duzhu Qingtian): A solitary column over 20 m tall stretches from cave floor to ceiling, estimated to be hundreds of thousands of years old, symbolizing permanence.
- Pearl Umbrella (Hungyuan Zhenzhu San): A giant canopy-shaped formation studded with pearl-like crystals that sparkle under lighting, considered the "treasure of the cave."
Other Notable Formations
Beyond the "Three and Three," the cave features Water Mirror Reflections, Silver Diamond, Twin Pillars, and Crown Prince's Ascension. Colored lighting punctuates the 2-km route every few minutes with a new breathtaking vista — the pacing is excellent.
5. Ticket Types & Prices
| Ticket type | What's included | On-site | Klook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic admission | Cave + scenic shuttle | ¥75 | ¥55 |
| Yangshuo combo | Cave + Yangshuo round-trip shuttle | ¥120 | ¥95 |
| Full-day tour | Silver Cave + Li River cruise | ¥280 | ¥220 |

The scenic shuttle runs from the parking lot to the cave entrance (about 1.5 km), a 20-minute walk otherwise. We recommend taking the shuttle to conserve energy for the cave tour.
6. Best Time to Visit
- Spring (Mar–May): Guilin's peak season. Mild temps (15–25°C), minimal temperature shock entering the cave. Wildflowers bloom along the way.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): Rainy season ends, weather clears, and perfect for combining with Li River cruises and Yangshuo cycling.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): Ground temps exceed 30°C, but the cave stays 18–20°C — a natural air conditioner. Downside: peak holiday season, expect queues. Arrive at 8:00 am or after 15:00.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Fewest crowds and lowest prices, but Guilin winters are damp and cold. Cave is warmer than outside.
Best time of day: Arrive at 8:00–10:00 am to avoid the main tour-group rush (usually 10:30–14:00). Afternoon crowds thin after 15:00.
7. How to Get There
From Yangshuo (most convenient)
Silver Cave is 28 km from Yangshuo town center, about 30–40 minutes by road — the closest jumping-off point for tourists.
- Taxi / ride-hailing: around ¥80–100 one way; ask the driver to wait.
- Tour shuttle from travel agencies: Many operators on Yangshuo's West Street offer half-day tours including round-trip shuttle + admission for ¥100–120 — convenient and hassle-free.
- E-bike rental: Some visitors cycle from Yangshuo, but the 28 km includes uphill sections and is not recommended for most.
From Guilin City
Silver Cave is 85 km from Guilin center, about 1.5 hours by car.
- Self-drive: Take expressway G65 to the Liupu exit and navigate directly. Free parking on-site.
- Hire a car for a full-day tour: Guilin to Li River scenic segment + Silver Cave, roughly ¥400–500 (tickets not included).
- Public transit: Guilin Bus Station → Liupu (2 hours), then local taxi to cave. Not recommended — infrequent and time-consuming.
From Guilin Airport (Liangjiang)
The airport is 120 km away. We recommend settling in Guilin or Yangshuo first, then visiting the cave. If time is tight, hire a car for a 2-hour direct route.
8. Combine With Li River & the Perfect Itinerary
Silver Cave and the Li River are Guilin's two signature attractions — we strongly recommend combining them. The classic pairing:
- Day 1 morning: Cruise the Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo (4–5 hours), passing karst peaks, Nine Horse Fresco, and Reflected Cloth Beach.
- Day 1 afternoon: Arrive Yangshuo, check in, explore West Street.
- Day 2 morning: Drive from Yangshuo to Silver Cave (30 min), tour the cave (2–3 hours).
- Day 2 afternoon: Return to Yangshuo, cycle the Yulong River or Ten Li Gallery scenic route.
Alternatively, book a Li River scenic rafting + Silver Cave combo day tour from Yangshuo — all-in-one with transport and tickets. Klook carries excellent packages at great value.
9. Pro Tips & What to Avoid
- Wear non-slip shoes. The cave floor is wet and slippery; sections have steps. Running shoes or hiking boots are best — never wear flip-flops or heels.
- Bring a light layer. Summer: 30°C outside to 18°C inside is a shock. A thin long-sleeve shirt helps.
- Be aware of lens fogging. Jumping from hot outdoors to cool cave can fog your camera. Store it in a sealed bag first, or wait 5–10 minutes after entering to let the lens acclimate.
- Bring a flashlight or phone torch. Although the cave is lit, some sections are darker. A headlamp helps navigate steps.
- Do not touch the stalactites. Body oils degrade delicate formations built over millennia. Cameras monitor the cave.
- Plan restroom stops carefully. The cave has no toilets; use facilities before entering. The full loop takes 1–1.5 hours without exit options.
- Avoid peak tour-group times. Tour groups typically arrive 10:30–14:00. For quieter exploration and photography, go at 8:00 am or after 15:00 on weekdays.
- Watch out for the shopping street at the exit. After exiting, you'll pass a commercial lane selling silver goods and local trinkets — prices are marked up.
10. Nearby Attractions & Easy Add-ons
Silver Cave sits between Yangshuo and Liupu. The region has plenty of other worthwhile stops:
- Li River scenic section: The heart of Guilin's karst landscape — a boat or bamboo-raft ride is essential.
- Yulong River bamboo rafting: Quieter than the main Li River, offering pastoral scenery. Full route about 1.5 hours from Jin Long Bridge to Old County.
- Ten Li Gallery cycling route: Yangshuo's classic bike path featuring Butterfly Spring, Ancient Banyan, and Moon Hill.
- Elephant Trunk Hill: Guilin's iconic landmark — start here if you're day-tripping from the city.
- Longji Terraced Fields: 3 hours away but spectacular if you stay 3+ days in the region.
11. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Silver Cave vs Ludiyan (Reed Flute Cave) — which is better?
Both rank among Guilin's top caves. Ludiyan is in the city, more accessible, smaller but equally stunning — once called the "state guest cave" (visited by many heads of state). Silver Cave is larger and more scenic but farther out. If you only have time for one, choose Silver Cave; if you want no travel hassle, Ludiyan works well.
Q: Can we visit on a rainy day?
Yes. Being underground, weather does not affect the cave itself. However, rain makes the trail slippery — extra caution needed. Self-drive routes may have poor visibility; go slowly.
Q: Is there a guide service?
Yes. Guides at the entrance charge around ¥80–100 per group and can share stories behind the formations. Audio-guide rentals are ¥20. A guide or audio-guide greatly enriches the experience beyond just "looking at pretty rocks."
Q: Wheelchair / mobility-limited access?
Not recommended. The cave floor has many steps and narrow sections. Guilin's Ludiyan has better accessibility infrastructure — a better choice for limited mobility.
Q: Can we bring pets?
No. The cave prohibits animals.
