1. What Daocheng Yading is
Daocheng County in Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, sits at 3,800–4,800 m. In 1928 American scholar Joseph Rock wrote in National Geographic: "This is the model for the Lost Horizon — the Last Shangri-La." Ever since, Daocheng Yading has been a pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists and nature lovers alike.
The core area is defined by the "3 sacred mountains" that ring a sanctuary: Mt. Chenrezig (Xiannairi, Avalokiteśvara), Mt. Jampelyang (Yangmaiyong, Manjusri), and Mt. Chanadorje (Xianuoduoji, Vajrapani). Each rises 5,800–6,032 m. Between them lie 5 sacred lakes: Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake, Pearl Lake, Drolma Tso, and Yangmai Tso.
2. The 6 must-see sights
- Mt. Chenrezig (Xiannairi) — 6,032 m. The main peak resembles a seated Avalokiteśvara.
- Mt. Jampelyang (Yangmaiyong) — 5,958 m. Pyramidal, the most graceful of the three.
- Mt. Chanadorje (Xianuoduoji) — 5,958 m. The most powerful in profile.
- Milk Lake — 4,500 m. Milky white from snow-mountain reflections + minerals.
- Five-Color Lake — 4,600 m. A 5-coloured halo on the surface — the most mysterious.
- Luorong Pasture — 4,150 m. Original Tibetan grazing meadow.

- Avoid: July–August rainy season (mudslide risk).
5. Altitude sickness — warning
Daocheng Yading is one of the highest-altitude tourist destinations in China. More than 50% of visitors experience some level of altitude sickness. Take this seriously:
- Start Rhodiola one week before departure;
- No showers or alcohol in the first 24 hours;
- Move slowly; avoid strenuous activity;
- Drink water (warm; avoid coffee);
