1. Why Jiuzhaigou is a must
Jiuzhaigou Valley sits in northern Sichuan, inside Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, at 2,000–4,000 m elevation. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage natural site in 1992 and a World Biosphere Reserve in 1997. Its hallmark: "100+ alpine lakes (tarns) + 5 waterfall groups + 12 valleys", where water colour shifts with the season, sunlight and mineral content — green, blue, white, orange, even purple. This is what earned it the nickname "fairytale world."
After the 2017 earthquake parts of the park were closed for rebuilding; reopened in 2020 with a daily 5,000-visitor cap and real-name reservation required. Pre-booking admission is now mandatory.

|---|---|---|---|

| Comfort | 4-star | Round-trip flights | ¥3,880 |
| Deluxe | 5-star | VIP charter + flights | ¥5,180 |

4. Best season
- Late September to early November (colour season) — Jiuzhaigou at its most stunning: red leaves + blue water. Most crowded; rates +30%.
- May–June — peak waterfall flow, mild temperatures.
- July–August — summer holidays + alpine heat escape.
- December–February — unique snow scenery, fewer visitors, ticket prices ~50% lower, but some valleys close due to snow.
- Avoid: March–April (cold spring + maintenance closures).
5. Self-guided vs guided group
| Mode | Price | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided group | ¥3,280–5,180 | Transport + hotels + guide all in | Fixed itinerary |
| Self-guided | ¥4,000–6,000 | Freedom | Routing research + altitude risk |
High elevation, complex routes and the real-name reservation hurdle mean I strongly recommend the guided tour for first-time visitors.
6. Altitude sickness — important
Jiuzhaigou sits above 2,000 m, Huanglong above 3,500 m. Around 30% of visitors get mild altitude sickness (headache, nausea, sleep loss). Prevention:
- Start Rhodiola one week before departure;
- No showers or alcohol in the first 24 hours after arrival;
- Move slowly; avoid strenuous activity;
- Drink water (skip coffee);
- Carry portable oxygen canisters (~¥30 from any pharmacy).
7. How to save money
- Pre-book on Klook 30 days ahead: save ¥300+;
- Avoid the colour season: save ¥800+;
- Pick the standard package: ¥600 less than comfort, mostly hotel upgrade;
- Children 1.0–1.4 m half price;
- Go in winter: -30% on rates and you get the snow.
8. Practical tips
- Bring: ID / passport, warm jacket (10°C+ swings on the mountain), oxygen, sunglasses, sunscreen;
- Don't bring: outside food into the Jiuzhaigou core area;
- Payment: Sichuan takes WeChat / Alipay;
- Language: Tibetan-ethnic guides offer Mandarin and English;
- Phone: no signal in the Jiuzhaigou core area — exit the park to call.
