1. What Jiuzhaigou is
In Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, 450 km from Chengdu. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 1992 and a World Biosphere Reserve in 1997. The name "Jiuzhai" (literally "Nine Villages") refers to the nine Tibetan settlements inside the valley.
Its hallmark: 108 alpine lakes (called "haizi" in Tibetan), 17 waterfall groups, and 12 valleys. Lake colours shift with the season, sunlight and minerals — green, blue, white, orange, even purple. Hence the nickname "fairytale world."
2. Top 8 sights
- Five-Flower Lake (Wuhuahai) — Jiuzhaigou's most famous, with coloured mineral patterns and crystal reflections.
- Nuorilang Waterfall — the park's widest (270 m).
- Long Lake (Changhai) — 3,103 m altitude, 100 m deep, the largest tarn.
- Five-Color Pond (Wucaichi) — pools that look like a paint palette.
- Pearl Shoal Waterfall — a "Journey to the West" filming location.
- Shuzheng Waterfall — the first waterfall as you enter.
- Tiger Lake — turquoise-green alpine lake.
- Mirror Lake — early-morning reflections at their best.
