1. The three cultural landmarks in detail
1.1 Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (Lingnan masterpiece)
Built in 1894 as a clan ancestral hall jointly funded by the Chen lineage. At 13,000 m², it is the largest and most ornately decorated traditional Lingnan complex still standing in China. The roof ridges showcase grey-clay sculpture, the walls brick carving, the eaves wood carving, the columns stone carving, and the railings cast iron — the full sweep of Cantonese craftsmanship. Listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Site in 1988.
1.2 Yongqingfang (revitalised old-Guangzhou quarter)
In Liwan District, this is the most intact stretch of old Guangzhou's Xiguan Old Houses, once derelict. A 2017 restoration preserved the Lingnan style and added contemporary cafés, design shops and artist studios. Cantonese opera and lion dancing on weekends. The best place to feel everyday Guangzhou life. Free entry.
1.3 Sacred Heart Cathedral (Stone Room)
On Yide Road, completed in 1888, this is one of only four Gothic Catholic cathedrals in the world built entirely of granite (the others are in Paris, London and New York). 58-metre twin spires, stained glass and Romanesque vaults. Designed by French architect Léon Vautrin. Free admission for visitors daily (except during Mass).

- Weekends: Cantonese opera and lion dance at Yongqingfang; Chen Clan Hall busier.
- Avoid: June–September thunderstorms; sites close around Spring Festival.
5. Self-guided vs guided group
| Mode | Price | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided group | ¥288–428 | Charter + guide + zero stress | Tight schedule |
| Self-guided | ¥50 (admissions + metro) | Free, cheap | Routing research, miss the context |
I recommend: first visit + want cultural context → guided. Long-term resident → self-guided.
