1. What it is
Opened in 1995, this is China's first national-level safari park. At 153 hectares it's twice the size of Shanghai Zoo (74 ha). Its hallmark is the "drive-through plus walking zone" hybrid model — the big predators (tigers, lions, brown bears, cheetahs) roam free in the drive-through zone and visitors must take the feeding bus through; everything else (pandas, giraffes, hippos, penguins, sea lions) is in the walking zone with no extra fee.
Versus Beijing Wild Animal Park (where you can drive your own car through the predator zone), Shanghai is safer but loses that DIY vibe. Versus Hong Kong's Ocean Park (no free-roaming predators), Shanghai feels closer to a real "wildlife observation" trip.
2. The 8 must-see zones
- Giant Panda House — two pandas, 3 feeding sessions per day.
- African Savannah (drive-through) — giraffes, zebras, rhinos and hippos roaming free.
- Predator zone (drive-through) — feed tigers and lions from the bus.
- White Tiger zone (drive-through) — the rare white Bengal tigers.
- Cute-pet park — alpacas, mini-horses and mini-pigs to interact with.
- Penguin House — 200+ Antarctic penguins.
- Sea Lion theatre — 4 shows daily at 11:00, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:00.
- Park lake boat tour — view the hippos and Seal Island from the water.
3. Suggested 1-day route (about 6 hours)
- 08:30 entry: head straight to the feeding bus (smallest crowds);
- 09:30: walking zone, starting at the Giant Panda House;
- 10:30: giraffe and zebra walking area;
- 11:00: Sea Lion show (first session);
- 12:00: lunch (BYO or on-site restaurant ¥60–100/person);
- 13:30: Sea Lion show (second session) + cute-pet park;
- 15:00: Penguin House + third Sea Lion show;
- 16:00: lake boat tour;
- 17:00: exit.
4. Feeding bus tips
The feeding bus is the park's signature experience, sold separately at ¥100/person (not included in the standard ticket):
- Food pack: raw meat strips and carrots, used to feed tigers, lions and bears.
- Glass windows: fully sealed and absolutely safe. Tigers will jump up and paw at the window — kids scream.
- 30-minute loop: through white tigers, Bengal tigers, Siberian tigers, African lions and brown bears.
- Best slot: the 08:30 first run — animals are just up and at their most active.
- Avoid: 13:00–14:00 (siesta time, almost no movement).
